In Cornwall the highest single cause of hospital admissions for children between the ages of 5 – 9 is tooth extraction under general anaesthetic – a medically proven risk to anyone, let alone a frightened child with debilitating toothache. Nationally this costs the NHS in England over £35m per year, a cost that has increased 65% over the last 5 years.  Combined with the educational impact of lost school days and the economic burden of parental absence from work, this becomes even more significant.

This is almost completely preventable if children have access to effective oral health education, fluoride application and toothbrushing clubs at an early stage.  Our specialist dental team became so disillusioned with removing teeth from so many children that we launched our Brighter Smiles Campaign, already backed by Cornwall Council and brand communications agency FUEL.

Join us to prevent tooth decay and make a sustainable difference to our younger generation.

Your school

Our campaign is dedicated to making a difference in Cornish communities. Working together with Cornwall Council, local businesses and individuals we go into schools providing fun and educational oral health education which includes:

  • Fluoride varnish application to children aged between 5 and 6 at schools across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly
  • Toothbrushing clubs at Family Hubs across the county and at schools
  • Regular oral health education sessions across the county providing pre-school children and their families with key oral health messages, and healthy diet advice
  • The Brighter Smiles team provide toothbrushes, toothpaste and general information to all those involved in the programme

Above all these activities are a fun way of highlighting the importance of good oral health from an early age and delivering sound advice about the best oral health regimes for a sustainably healthy future of super bright smiles. To involve your school please contact us

Dental Professionals

We are working with other dental professionals who share our ‘prevention is better than cure’ outlook and, like us, care deeply about the oral health of their local community and younger generation.  In some cases their dental nurses have undertaken training with us and joined our bank of volunteers to deliver the campaign in local schools. If you’d like to discuss joining Brighter Smiles and offering your services, please get in touch, we’d be delighted to hear from you.

Our Supporters

Our campaign provides a range of mutually beneficial opportunities for supporters to make a real difference to young people in their local community.  On average it costs £10 per child to deliver this oral healthcare programme in schools across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. That works out at around £250 per class* or if you’d like to support an average school of one-form intake each year you’d only pay £1500*

*Based on 25 children per class

Help us reach more schools and more children by becoming a supporter and in return for financially supporting our campaign in your local school you will benefit from:

  • A certificate commending your support
  • Your name/logo on certificates for all participating pupils
  • Your name/logo and up to 150 words on our Brighter Smiles Campaign website linked to the school you are supporting
  • A news release and photograph promoting your support to local media, with content made available for your own use
  • Year round promotion through our social media channels
  • Support in fostering a sustainable and mutually beneficial relationship with your local school and our specialist dental team
