Get involved

Join us in supporting our Brighter Smiles campaign and help us prevent tooth decay and make a sustainable difference to local children across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

Schools, nurseries and family hubs

Our campaign is dedicated to making a difference to children’s oral health across Cornish communities through:

  • Toothbrushing clubs highlighting the importance of good oral health from an early age and providing sound advice about the best oral health regimes
  • Fluoride varnish application in schools for children aged between 5 and 6 for whom we have consent
  • Oral health education sessions providing children and their families with key oral health messages and healthy diet advice
  • Providing toothbrushes, toothpaste and general information to all those involved in the programme

Our activities are a fun way of embedding good oral health from an early age and delivering sound advice about the best oral health regimes for a sustainable future of bright, confident and healthy smiles. If you can help us identify a generous supporter to fund the delivery of Brighter Smiles in your community, please contact us.

Dental Professionals

We love working with other dental professionals who share our ‘prevention is better than cure’ outlook and, like us, care deeply about the oral health of children in their local community and the younger generation. In some cases, their dental nurses have undertaken training with us and joined our bank of volunteers to deliver the campaign in local schools. In other cases dental students have helped us deliver oral health education, thus adding to their skills and experience. If you would like to discuss supporting Brighter Smiles by offering your services, please get in touch, we’d be delighted to hear from you, but please note that due to the pandemic we are currently restricted in what we can offer.

There are three levels of volunteering support for Brighter Smiles:

  • Observation and administrative (great for clinical students) – individuals require DBS (current within the last 3 years), indemnity, occupational health clearance and a portfolio evidencing mandatory training (e.g. in safeguarding, manual handling, basic life support, confidentiality and data protection) which can all be requested by a school, nursery or family hub
  • Fluoride varnish application and administrative support (great for dental nurses holding their FV qualification and all the above)
  • Oral health education (great for a clinician aspiring to step beyond delivery in a surgery environment and into the ‘classroom’) – individuals would require all of the above excluding the FV qualification

Our Supporters

We simply can’t achieve all that we do without the generosity of our supporters as this type of work is not currently funded by the NHS in Cornwall. On average our campaign costs around £10 per pupil – based on 25 pupils this works out at just £250 to support a whole class or nursery, up to £1500 to support an average-size school of one-form intake each year, or anywhere in between depending on how much you are able to commit. We seek a minimum three-year commitment so that together we make a lasting difference to the oral health of a local community.

In return we provide a range of mutually beneficial opportunities for our supporters who benefit from:

  • A supporter-branded certificate commending your support for both the school, nursery or family hub and supporter to proudly display
  • Your name/logo on our Brighter Smiles Campaign website
  • A news release and photograph promoting your support to local media, with content made available for your own use
  • Year-round promotion through our proactive social media channels
  • Support in fostering a sustainable and mutually beneficial relationship with your local community and our specialist dental team
  • Involvement in local community events with recognition of your support for the pupils’ oral healthcare
  • An invitation to an annual Brighter Smiles Supporters’ ‘thank you’ event
  • Sharing any other positive outcomes from your generous support and of course we welcome your own ideas to showcase your support for Brighter Smiles

Help us improve the oral health of more Cornish children in your local community by becoming a supporter. Please contact us – it’s a great way to demonstrate your Corporate Social Responsibility and local community support.
